AN EXHIBITION OF WORKS BY GRAHAM COXON
Building on last year success with John Lennon’s originals and prints, Island Fine Arts are extremely pleased to be able to show the works of Graham Coxon over the period of the Isle of Wight pop festival 2010. The exhibition will run from Wednesday, 9th to Saturday, 19th June, 9.30am to 5pm daily including Sunday, 13th June.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to view unseen works by Graham, and a must for all Blur and Graham Coxon fans. The exhibition will feature originals and all of the limited edition prints that have been published to date. The prints are in editions of 300, each one signed and numbered by Graham with prices starting from £114.
Graham Coxon was born on the 12 March 1969. He came to prominence as one of the most brilliant guitarists of his generation, both with Blur and as a solo artist with seven highly acclaimed albums to his credit. He studied fine art at Goldsmiths for about a year, until Blur’s success forced him to choose between music and art. Over the years, Graham Coxon has created all the distinctive artwork for his solo albums, plus the cover for Blur’s album 13; he has also continued painting a series of more personal work, most of which hang in his home in Kent and have remained unseen.
Initially finding inspiration in abstract work as a teenager, painters such as De Kooning, Kline, Chagall, Picasso and more recently Patrick Heron have been merged into a melting pot of ideas, which he is constantly refining. His art has been for him a voyage of self-discovery. “I think people would look at that painting for three seconds and discard it as being just blobs. Most people do that with abstract art, they don’t take it seriously. I think art is really lot more about self reflection than what you think the painting is about.”
Graham is drawing ever day, these sketches are the foundation blocks of his paintings. “To me it’s a similar struggle writing a song as to painting a picture because you’re dealing with a similar sort of truth. You know when you’re lying.” It is this personal tussle with his art that has become the driving force in his quest to understand life’s experiences and develop the visual identity that is his goal.
Interview with Graham can be arranged and are on request. For further details please contact Nick Fletcher on 01983-875133
